Workshops – Poppy Memorial

Ruth worked with the school art group to design a Remembrance Day Memorial sculpture. Students drew and proposed their own designs and then Ruth created a final sculpture inspired by these to be on permanent display in the school’s sculpture garden.

Points considered and incorporated into the design from the sketches, designs and discussions with the students:
Poppy flower; a sign of hope and remembrance. The different flower sizes reflecting adults, children and different members of the family and the wider population.
The installation design is of a scar on the landscape, like the trenches of war depicting the horrors of conflict but the Poppies bursting from this demonstrate the hope and memory that remembrance day brings.
